The late holiday post

I apologize for the long draught between substantive updates. Of course, we remain pretty busy with Project Patrick, and his presence made the recent holidays pretty awesome. Not just for us, either. I think most everyone in our family and friends were stoked to have him around.

He doesn’t really know about Christmas, or why Mommy and Daddy put up a tree. And then took down the tree. Or why he received a bunch of presents. Or what presents are.

But he’s got a lot of potential as for as Christmas spirit goes. At the very least, he’s got the good cheer part down.

Patrick plays his first piano with some help from Uncle Scott.

We’re excited our picture quality should be improving considerably in the new year. Jordan’s dad bought us a new camera: a Nikon D5000, and while we’re still learning the ropes, even its autofocus function is a big improvement over our old Canon point-and shoot. Witness the great shot above, which is probably the best pic from our batch of holiday photos.

We were pretty excited to spend time with our extended family, in Bastrop and in Houston, and as expected, we had a blast:

We wore awesome new Christmas / Winter clothes.

We met some new friends.

We ate like kings (and queens).

Jordan baked dessert.

We opened presents. The grandparents got just what they wanted: PoP (Pictures of Patrick).

And we bridged generations, with great-grandsons and great-grandmothers.

Pretty great, huh? But it’s always a stressful time, too, during the holidays. And sometimes money is tight. And sometimes it’s hard driving around to see everyone and deciding where to spend that first Christmas morning with the baby.

And sometimes the wind blows so hard that it threatens to wreck your temporary outside dining room, where you were planning to feed 25 people who came into town for what might be her last Christmas.

But as we’ve seen recently, nature can do much worse.

Baby Picture Battle Royale

It’s unavoidable that people just meeting Patrick will take sides in determining which parent he best resembles. We in the Preddy household support these evaluations. We do it ourselves. You may be surprised to learn Jordan thinks Patrick resembles her, and I tend to think he favors me.

These disagreements amongst friends and family have not yet come to violent blows. But it is only a matter of time. In the interest of peace and stability, we have decided to release a few baby photos of our younger selves, which you may now compare with our superior offspring. With the aid of this objective evidence, the answer should become quite clear. Perhaps we might even end the uneasy debate once and for all.

Patrick’s Birthday Photos

A few days ago, I promised you more photos, and here they are. Well, some of them. There are more. These are, in fact, just the shots from Jordan’s sister, Jessica. She took more than 400 photos, and we’ve whittled them down to 81 of our faves. Jordan’s sister is kind of a semi-pro photographer, so we we’re lucky and extremely grateful that she was able to capture the entire birth with her fancy Nikon. And although I’ve said “entire birth”, be assured that the following photos are all safe for work.

Ultrasonic Goodness

So we went in for our first big-time, fancy ultrasound at the UT Womens Health Center. There we received some very good news: our little one appears healthy and normal. Unfortunately, baby wasn’t very enthusiastic about the photo session, so we weren’t able to get good profile or head shots. Our player-to-be-named-later spent much of the time with hands and arms blocking every decent angle.

Jordan thinks the shyness is a good indicator the baby is a girl. But we remain steadfast that we will not find out the gender of the baby until he/she debuts on his/her birthday.

For you stats junkies, here are a few salient facts:

The heart rate is 153.
Weight is 13 ounces.
And the baby is about the size of a can of soda.

Finally, as promised, we are posting the ultrasound pics here for you. So you gender detectives can check out this kid in high-resolution awesomeness. But if you figure it out, don’t tell us. Jordan would have you hung by your thumbs. I am not kidding. Those pirates got off easy compared to you potential spoilers.

I’m guessing the only thing more insufferable than people who constantly talk about their kids are the people who constantly blog about their kids. And upload pictures to the internet. And post their videos to Facebook.

So, I’m warning you now. Prepare to suffer the insufferable. Because Jordan and I are two people who have always wanted to have kids. Even when we were both little, and didn’t know each other, we knew we wanted to be parents. As occasionally childish and wrongheaded as I’ve been in my life, I’ve never wavered in this particular. I knew I wanted to be a dad.

Jordan is the same way. She’s always wanted to be a mom.

And for nearly as long as we’ve known each other, we’ve also known we would try to have kids together. Today, I’m happy to tell you that one of us is pregnant. And the other one is pretty stoked about it. We invite you to join us here, as we figure this family stuff out.

By the way, here is our work-in-progress. We are a little more than 12 weeks now. The due date is August 31. Jordan says to tell you we are not finding out the sex until the baby is born. In a world where everything is shared, I guess some secrets are still worth keeping. Even from ourselves.

Is it early? Yes. But we’d have to tell you some time, and this seems like a fine way to do it. We want our first post to be a real first. We are now able to see the beginnings of arms and legs. After seeing Bodyworlds recently, I’m all the more amazed at how advanced a tiny human can be.

What can you expect from us as future parents and bloggers? More than just baby pics. Jordan is a baking aficionado, so you may be seeing some of that here. And I will most likely abandon my old personal blog in favor of this one. So, whatever I write about, from politics to tech dorkery, it will probably be posted here as well.

We’re excited. We hope you’re excited, too.
